It’s easy to check out the facts about any candidate’s campaign finances. By law, they must report quarterly to the Federal Election commission (F.E.C.). The reports display total contributions and expenditures, as well as a breakdown of that information that shows names of donors, how much they gave, which state the donors live in, and how the campaigns spent their money. The report also shows how much a candidate donated or loaned to his or her own campaign.
Go to www.fec.gov (or click on the FEC Logo on this page) then click on “Campaign Finance Data” near the upper left. Noodle around until you find a place to type the candidate’s name or find a list of candidates for different races to search. Click on the candidate’s name to open the report. Once you find the report, you can click on the data summary to get an itemized list. By law, donations of more than $250 by an individual must be reported by name, occupation, and state of residence; the donation limit is $2,800 per individual for a primary, and the same amount for the general election. Click on “Itemized Individual Contributions” to get this detailed list. “Un-itemized Contributions” are donations less than $250; amounts are listed but without names. Where “Act Blue” is listed as a contributor that is a weekly total of donations less than $250 made through the Act Blue website. You can also click on “Operating Expenditures” to see a detailed list of how a candidate has spent his or her funds, for instance on a media consultant, staff salaries, parties, etc..
Have fun!
